Susan McGalla Continues To Break The Mold

Pittsburgh Steelers executive Susan McGalla is no stranger to hard work, which is why the Steel City has embraced her with open arms. A native of hard-working East Liverpool, Ohio, Susan is no stranger to hard work. She recently sat down with to give some insight to how diversity in a corporation is vital to continued success and growth. She discussed the importance of both gender and ethnic diversity in the marketplace, as they are both known to outperform those companies that are less diverse. Susan admits that women leadership initiatives do not address the problem as well as executive sponsorship does. By having an executive sponsorship women can leverage that experience and knowledge to help them be strong executives in the future. This is something that Susan McGalla knows from experience.

While growing up in Ohio, Susan had a football coach for a father, who demanded a lot out of her and her brothers regardless of their gender. This helped Susan stand up to scrutiny in a mostly-male corporate world. After graduating from Mount Union College (OH), she began as a merchandiser for American Eagle Outfitters, eventually working her way all the way to the top. She was named President and Chief Merchandising Officer in 1998 and left a year later to become Chief Operating Officer of Wet Seal, Inc.

After spending some time as a private consultant, Susan was named Vice President of Business Strategy and Creative Development for the National Football League’s Pittsburgh Steelers. This role has made Susan a pioneer for women executives who want to succeed in what is historically a man’s role. She is an true inspiration to what perseverance and toughness can do for a professional, regardless of their gender.
